We look forward to working together with Parents, Caregivers, Teachers, Administration, including our newly assigned school principal Mrs. Zaino, and the Greater Haverhill Community for the 2010-2011 school year.
We will be reaching out to volunteers this summer to participate in our Back-to-School Clean-up Day where we will plant flowers and spruce-up the grounds in August.
Next PTO Meeting tentatively scheduled for Wednesday, October 6 at 3:30pm.
Meeting are open to everyone and generally held after school on the first Wednesday of each month; meeting details will be posted to this site and fliers are sent home in backpacks.

Meeting Minutes May 5, 2010
Principal's Update
* Mrs. Kitsos announced she will be stepping down as our Principal at the end of the school year. She is also the Principal of Whittier Middle School and trying to juggle both schools was very challenging. She let us know that Mrs. Zaino, Principal at Moody, will be our new principal for the next school year. She will attend our June meeting!
* The "all-purpose" room was cleaned out over April vacation and our book fair was held in it! Thanks to Mr. Sargent for cleaning it out.
Visit from the Mayor
* Mayor Fiorentini dropped by unexpectedly to let us know some more information about the proposed meals tax which he is asking the city to adopt. If the tax is added it will benefit the schools directly by helping to restore an estimated $250,000 to the school department budget. He urged parents to come to the next City Council Meeting and support the tax, as well as email them.

The ELMO's and projectors have arrived!
The classrooms need white boards to use them to their greatest capacity. It was agreed to purchase one for each class at a cost of roughly $91 total for all the rooms. The white boards will be purchased next week and installed.
Teacher/Staff Appreciation Week May 3rd - 7th
* Monday – Wednesday the staff was treated to a small token of our appreciation each day. Thanks to Siobhan Atwood for coordinating the luncheon on Thursday which was a big hit! The week ended with an ice cream social for the staff on Friday. Thanks to Sarah Fusco and Liz Kemblowski for helping out on Friday.
Book Fair
May 4rd – 7th. The Buy One Get One Free was a great success. It was held in the new “all-purpose” room. Thanks to Anne Goddard, our fabulous volunteer librarian, for running it and to all the parents that took time out of their day to come help the kids find some wonderful books!
Spring Yard Sale/Festival
* Some people have volunteered but we need a lot more!!
Field Day
* Coming up in June. This is a great day for the kids. More information will be going out towards the end of this month.
Next Year
* We will be holding elections next month for next year’s officers. If you have any interest in holding a position please let us know or come to our next meeting!

- $3 million in budget cuts city wide.

Nickels for Neurofibromatosis - January – Mrs. Reilly’s & Mrs. Brent’s classes enjoyed their ice cream sundae party last Friday and had a great time! A big thank you to Jenn McGonagle, Judy Manzi, and Janice Young, and Suzette DiTonno for dishing out the ice cream and cleaning up!
Soda can tabs for Shriner’s Hospital – February – the school collected two 5-gallon water containers worth of tabs!! The children enjoyed their extra recess this past Monday. A big thank you to Karen Archambault and Siobhan Atwood for volunteering to supervise the children during the recess!

The Butter Braid Pastry and cookie dough fundraiser ends on Monday. All the profit will be used to purchase new ELMO machines and projectors, ideally we would like to purchase 2 by the end of the year. They cost approximately $1400 each.

- Yankee Candle sold over $6000 in product we receive 40% , products should be in before Thanksgiving.
- Innisbrook sold over $3000 in product we receive 50% products should be in by the end of the month. We still need to pay shipping so we do not have the total raised yet from either fundraiser but it should be around $4000.00

- In house Field trip the Fossil Lady is coming on October 21st, PTO agreed to cover the costs of $325.00.
- 2nd grade wants to go to Strawberry Bank, PTO agreed to pay for the buses, estimate $300
- School wide field trip in March for Hungry Little Caterpillar in Chelmsford
- Ms. Eileen in the lunch room is concerned about not having enough lunches on days when children forget to bring their lunch. Mrs. Atwood offered to pick up some supplies at BJ’s.
- Hot top has been patched on the playground by the city.
- The concrete in front of the school will be repaired by the contractor that cracked it, in the near future.

Mr. Marino introduced our new Principal Mrs. Beth Kitsos! She is also the Principal of John Greenleaf Whittier Middle School and will become our Principal on July 1st, as Mr. Marino is retiring.
Mrs. Kitsos gave us some wonderful news she has had our Walnut Square website through the city updated! A link to this PTO website is also included now!!
Second Grade field trip - June 5th to the Children's Museum.
Step Up Day for second graders - Tuesday, June 9th.
Field day is scheduled for June 12th, rain date June 17th. If you have volunteered to help out you will be receiving information early next week as to your time slot. Thanks to all who have volunteered to help make this day possible!
The PTO will pay for an ice cream truck to come to the school again this year, date to be announced.
The second grade will be having a mini graduation on June 19th with pizza and ice cream.
The fall book fair which usually runs in November may be moved up to October.

The yard sale made $728. Kohl's will be sending a check for $500 also.
The profit from the Silver Graphics art was $1,554. Some of that money will be given to Miss Jamieson (the art teacher) so she can purchase more art supplies.
The butterfly field trips are coming up. First Grade on May 14th, Second Grade on the 15th and Kindergarten on the 18th.
Second Grade field trip is June 5th to the Children's Museum.
Field day is scheduled for June 12th, rain date June 17th.
Nominations for next year's PTO board will go out shortly. Election is at the next meeting which is June 3rd.
Summer Reading Program run by the library will occur again this year.
The design for the blue t-shirts has been picked. So the order form for that will go out soon.
Mr. Marino spoke about the budget and stimulus money.

Wednesday, February 4, 2009
A discussion was held concerning the possibility of Walnut Square closing in light of the tough economic times. Parents are encouraged to contact the Mayor and School Committee Members to urge them to keep Walnut open and explore other places to save money. The savings from closing the school is not enough to justify the disruption of so many children.
Our nurse will be leaving on Friday, February 13th for a new position in the private sector. It is unclear when we will have a replacement.
The PTO agreed to donate money to pay for snacks for the gym teachers program in March.
Approval was given to purchase a new small fridge/freezer to keep in the main hall for ice packs.
Approval was given to purchase some breakfast foods to keep at the front desk.
The Pennies for Patients Drive will run the first 3 weeks in March to benefit the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society.
The Spring Scholastic Book Fair will be coming up in April.
Volunteers were requested to work on our annual Calendar raffle which will run in April.
A yard sale to raise money for Field Day will be held on Saturday, May 2nd.
Parents were reminded to keep sending in Shaws receipts, Box Tops and Campbells labels.

The Teachers Holiday Luncheon planned for Monday December 8th is ready to go. We do need volunteers to help set up and clean up after the event. If you can help please send us an email!
The Little Elves Shop scheduled for December 17th and 18th is coming up fast. Volunteers are needed to help the children make selections and then check out. If you can help please send us an email and let us know your availability (mornings or afternoons).
NOTE: All volunteers must have a CORI on file!!
Almost $400 in Shaws receipts has already been turned in. We need to reach $5000 to recieve our 1% cash back so send in those receipts!
Approval was given to pay for buses to shuttle kids to the Holiday concert .

Troop Drive was a big success. PTO will cover cost of shipping 2 boxes, donations from students will cover cost of 1 box.
Book Fair begins next week. Schedule of volunteers is almost complete.
Hat and Mitten Drive to benefit local children will begin in December.
The nurse needs donations of new underwear to keep on hand for children who have accidents during the day. Right now she is mostly in need of boys underwear.
Teachers Holiday Luncheon is in the planning stages. Matt Noury will be cooking the main meal. Volunteers will be needed to set up the meal and clean up after. Paper Products and desserts will be needed. If you' d like to volunteer or donate, email us.
Little Elves workshop - Jenn McGonagle, Larry Trevette, Dena Noury and Suzette DiTonno volunteered to purchase items.
Teachers lunch on the first Friday of each month allotment changed to $100.00 to include the entire staff.
Approval was given to purchase an electric stapler.
Spring Festival/Yard Sale agreed upon, date is yet to be determined.
